We are happy to announce the winners for our 2020 program.

CIRCAC launched its scholarship program to support area students who are pursuing courses of study that can advance our mission and promote future stewardship of Cook Inlet’s waters and shorelines.

The CIRCAC/Captain Barry Eldridge Memorial Scholarship is offered for Maritime Studies. Until his death in October 2012, Capt. Richard “Barry” Eldridge was an integral part of the CIRCAC family. He served as a valued public member of the Prevention, Response, Operations and Safety (PROPS) committee for 17 years. This year’s scholarship winner is Rio Shemet Pitcher from Homer High School.

“I was born in Homer and spent my entire life on the shores of Kachemak Bay. My experience living along the ocean has inspired me to pursue a career in marine biology, focusing on protecting Alaska’s maritime environment,” Shemet Pitcher says.

The CIRCAC/James Carter Memorial Scholarship is offered for Environmental Sciences, in honor of the late James Carter and in recognition of his dedicated service as Executive Director of the CIRCAC Board of Directors. This year’s scholarship winner is Autumn Carlson from Homer Flex High School.

“Science has always been my passion whether it was working in labs, doing research, and internships, my love for this occupation grew exponentially. My dream to become a marine biologist is a goal I have been working towards for years. Soon I will be acquainted with the opportunity to work towards a biology degree for this career. I am pursuing this job not only for my benefits but to help the world around me stay healthy,” Carlson says.
